I did two workshops with Josh, one online, the other in the field. Josh is an excellent teacher with an easy-going personality that makes him approachable and easy to communicate with. He is knowledgeable and professional. At the sunset workshop I learned how to adjust ISO for low-light conditions and also to be mindful of shutter speed in windy conditions. The online workshop on shooting waterfalls contained several little gems including looking for light in the scene and for points of interest in the foreground to add to the photo. Both very worthwhile and recommended.

As I reacquaint myself with my long-lost passions for photography and astronomy (and trying to combine the two), I have attended several workshops run by skilled practitioners. Josh takes the cake! Humourous, attentive, immensely talented and treats everyone as though they are the only participant there. After taking the time to ensure my camera was optimally configured, my first photo was so good I was going to stop right there – but, with more assistance and encouragement, they only got better. Highly recommended.

Workshops with Josh & TJ never disappoint — honestly, I’m convinced they sprinkle some kind of magic over the whole experience. Small groups, top-notch tutoring, smooth travel and accommodation… and enough laughs to count as an ab workout. Nothing is ever too hard for them — except maybe keeping us all out of trouble. I always come home with new skills, epic memories, and at least one hilarious story. (like I lost my drone) Their workshops are the highlight of my year, and I’m already buzzing for 2026 in the Kimberley. If I could fast-forward time, I would!

I recently did a fantastic photography workshop with Josh Beams along the Great Ocean Road, and it well and truly blew past my expectations. The workshop caters to all levels and Josh gave everyone personalised, spot-on advice about perspective, framing, and dialling in the perfect settings. My photography game definitely levelled up. The Port Campbell accommodation was great, and Josh and his lovely partner T were endlessly helpful and always around with tips (and enthusiasm!). We explored so many incredible photo spots and even caught a murmuration at sunset. The post-processing session was the cherry on top and really pulled everything together. Highly recommend! If you’re on the fence, that’s the only bad angle you’ll take on this workshop. Book it!

I did a creative portrait workshop with Josh last year. He was knowledgeable, helpful and really kept the energy high over the course of the day. He gave me great insight into shooting in low light conditions, something I hadn't done much of at the time. Would highly recommend him as mentor/host and I'm sure his workshops will benefit all growing photographers!

Josh's workshop in the Alfred Nicholas Gardens was incredible. I felt out of my depth as the other attendees were clearly more advanced than me, but Josh has such an easy inclusive manner, and he is patient and kind and I came away feeling so energised. I would recommend anyone, beginner or advanced, who wants to learn more about photography, to attend one of Josh's classes.

I enjoyed the editing masterclass course. I go so much out of it.

What a combination; I had an awesome holiday, with beautiful locations, great company and I learned as well. I always enjoyed photography but felt a little lost with some of the digital camera manual settings. By the end of the trip I was adjusting my settings by touch, on the go and was very happy with the pictures. Josh and TJ were great at teaching us skills while allowing us to have our own styles and perspective, but better. Highly recommend.

I love doing Josh’s workshops. I went on my second workshop earlier this year with Josh. This time it was winter workshop in the New Zealand. What a fantastic 8 days photographing the stunning scenery of the South Island. Under Josh’s tuition during this I learnt shortcuts to bracketing, focus stacking and post processing tips. Josh has a friendly, calm and chilled manner about him and is a fantastic teacher, so willing to share his photographic knowledge and experience. I am looking forward to the 3 (local and international) workshops I have with Josh in 2026. During the New Zealand workshop I accidentally fell into a river (my fault) with my camera and lens both getting water logged. Josh went above and beyond using various techniques to successfully dry out both items. Thank you Josh !!! I highly recommend going on Josh’s workshops. You’ll have a blast !!

Catherine “ I did 2x Workshops back to back (Faroe Islands + Iceland) with Josh earlier this year. I cannot recommend him enough to others, amateurs or seasoned photographers . Even after 8 years of shooting, I still picked up so many tricks I didn’t know about or could refine. Just seeing how pumped he is to be there in these epic places, sharing knowledge, cracking jokes, makes the whole experience one you won’t forget anytime soon. Even when the weather is nasty or not playing in your favour, he still manages to get you into some pretty epic locations, and isn’t afraid to put in the work at doing so. Overall, I did come away from these trips with a new found confidence in my work, would 100% do more workshops with him in the future!

My photography workshop in Iceland with Josh was truly exceptional. His tuition throughout the trip was clear, practical and genuinely elevated my photography. He has a great way of explaining both the technical and creative aspects, and he always made sure each of us walked away with shots we were proud of. The accommodation was far better than I expected for a trip built around chasing light and locations. Every place we stayed was comfortable, warm and well-chosen, allowing us to rest properly between long shooting days. What really set the workshop apart, though, was Josh’s deep knowledge of Iceland. He consistently had us in the right locations at the perfect moments—sunrise, sunset, storms breaking, aurora windows and that skill alone led to some of the best images I’ve ever taken. An unforgettable trip, run by someone who truly knows the craft and the country. Highly recommended.

I have only attended a Nikon online course with Josh, but it totally wetted my appetite to be at an in person course. Josh has a relaxed and friendly approach to his teaching. His passion for photography is palpable, and he manages to infuse this into the course. Josh is a master of composition, and knows his cameras. His technical instructions are to the point and he emphasises knowing where all your buttons are, and what they do. Every shot is different, and requires its own approach. Josh is able to instruct in a way that instills confidence to adapt to the moment. I have already recommended Josh to friends.

The three day Grampians Workshop was more than I expected. Besides being very lucky with the weather the locations Josh has researched and took the group to were perfect for the theme within the landscape and astro we photographed. Josh's knowledge in some instances solidified my knowledge, and taught me the benefits of selecting your own white balance. Thanks Josh, I am looking forward to my next workshop with you.

This course was a game changer for my business! I signed up expecting to get some direction and knowledge through Josh's past experiences running his business but I did not expect to get that plus all the resources and tools he provided. He kept the group small which was great because we were all able to ask questions and go off on tangents and get some nuggets that weren't planned. It was clear Josh invested a huge amount of time and effort into putting this together and he cared about helping us improve our businesses. I was looking into doing a course for about a year and so many people who run them didn't seem genuine and didn't have concrete proof that they have been able to achieve what they are trying to teach, after meeting Josh in 2021 at a wedding and hearing about his strategies and success from his ventures I jumped at the opportunity to learn from him when he sent out his expressions of interest email. This course has given me a clear direction of where to take my business with the custom action plan I've already made some major changes in how I operate. If you are just starting out in the photography business world or have been doing it part time for years and feel lost like I did this course will set you up for success!

Josh and TJ made us feel welcome from the first meeting in the hotel lobby. They have a great understanding of both the technical and artistic sides to photography. They made sure we understood both the practical and theoretical sides and encouraged us to ask questions about how to get the shot we wanted. We found we had learnt things without realising it, and during the review at the end of each days shooting it became obvious how much better the shots we took were with each passing day The locations were amazing, the accomodation and transport were great. I would recommend to this to anyone with an interest in photography regardless of experience level. We booked another workshop within days of finishing this and can’t wait until the next adventure.

I undertook a sunset workshop with Josh up on Mount Hotham at the Bright Festival of Photography (BFOP). I found him easy to get along with and he was willing to share his knowledge and expertise on how to improve techniques, both in using my camera and what to look for in my composure to improve my images. This was one of the better workshops I have attended and look forward to doing more with him.

Such a good mix of business and creative tips. Email inquiries are rolling in, my workflow is cleaner and I’m not drowning in edits anymore. Should’ve done this ages ago.

I joined one of Josh Beames’ landscape workshops down the Great Ocean Road a while back, and it was an unforgettable experience. Josh is not only an exceptionally talented photographer, he’s also a fantastic teacher. He broke down complex techniques like long exposures, composition, and capturing mood in a way that was simple, practical, and fun. What impressed me most was how much individual attention he gave to everyone. He made sure each person understood their camera, helped refine our shots, and guided us to the best locations with perfect timing for light and conditions. I finished the workshop with a huge boost in confidence and some of my favourite landscape images I’ve ever taken. If you’re thinking about learning from Josh—do it. His workshops are worth every minute.

My favourite moment was shooting along the Melbourne CBD laneways and capturing long-exposure light trails near Flinders Street. Josh took us to spots I would never have found on my own, and the mix of reflections, street lights, and fast-moving trams created some amazing night compositions. The biggest improvement for me was learning how to properly use manual mode at night—balancing shutter speed, aperture and ISO for long exposures. Josh explained it in such a simple, practical way that everything finally clicked. My low-light shots have improved massively because of this workshop. The workshop gave me a huge confidence boost. I now feel much more in control of my camera at night and I’m excited to experiment more with creative long exposures. It made me realise I can capture professional-looking night images with the gear I already have. I’d recommend the Melbourne by Night workshop to anyone. Josh is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and makes the whole session fun and easy to follow. Hi, I met with Josh on the Melbourne Magic by Night class..it was a great evening of learning in particular using the histogram which I use a lot now, also long exposure shots with filters. Josh is a skilled and knowledgeable photographer and instructor..I would recommend any of his courses

The Focus on the Future master class was jam-packed with practical, real-world tools and strategies enabling me to pivot immediately from being a hobby photographer to starting up a business. I met josh in a cafe where his prints were hanging up. Just in that short time he was kind enough to share some great tips. I just had to do his course! The behind the scenes stuff about selling through businesses really hit home. I’ve made more print income this month than all of last year 👍 legend.

This short, to the point book gives advice on how to manage our ever varying light scenarios. Josh offers creative alternatives to the shot that might have been planned. His suggestions take us out of our mindset of what we think we might be going to shoot, to a creative flowing state of mind where the image is created by making use of what nature has offered.

I attended a photography workshop in Kununurra earlier in the year with Josh. I was nervous at first, having never travelled without my husband but was immediately put at ease by Josh’s welcoming smile and friendly demeanour. The workshop was well organised and although he had to make some changes due to the weather, he went above and beyond to ensure that we got to see the most beautiful locations and scenery unlike anything I had ever personally experienced, even going out of his way to find some bird and wildlife for me to take photos of. Josh’s enthusiasm, expertise and passion for photography was infectious, exciting everyone in the group. He offered invaluable one on one instruction and guidance when needed, teaching me more in one week than I have learnt in all the years I have been shooting, totally transforming my understanding of photography. Every time I do a course with Josh I learn so many new techniques and tips. He knows his way around so many cameras and can show you quick ways to get the best from the camera. With an emphasis on composure, he has taken my photos to a new level, bringing amazing insight and interest to my end product. There are so many photos that I can can enlarge as incredible art pieces. Sharing his time around, everyone feels their needs have been taken care of. Josh's Property and Corporate Business course has genuinely transformed the way I work. I learnt that time really is money, and Josh showed me how to streamline my workflow both on-site and in the office, and helped fix up all the little issues. Standing on Mt Hotham at sunrise, with an incredibly bitter wind, Josh moved between all the workshop members, advising us of the appropriate settings to ensure we captured the best image. This included using your histogram and exposing for the highlights, (to the right) to ensure you capture a perfect image, as you can bring out the detail in post-production. I have used this technique since no matter what I am shooting - with great success. I have been on many of Josh's workshops and highly recommend them.

I just loved taking pretty pics before this but now I’m thinking like a brand! The lessons on storytelling and pitching were so valuable. I’m already chatting with a travel company about a collab! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE 😍🌍

I attended the Chasing Perspectives workshop at BFOP on Friday 10th October on The Horn at Mt Buffalo. It was a cold and very windy evening, but the light around sunset was magic. A little crazy with about twenty people asking for assistance. Your fiancé suggested a couple of settings which helped me capture a few photos that really popped with a golden colour and lovely layers. I am looking forward to doing the Great Ocean Road workshop in 2026.

The information provided was very comprehensive, if anyone no matter who you are doesn’t learn something new, you have a closed mind. Recommend Josh, of course I would

I've done several workshops with Josh and they have been great. The latest workshop was a four day workshop along the Great Ocean Road. Josh is a natural teacher and he has the ability to simplify photographic techniques without all the technical jargon and being a 68 year old this is really handy for me. Being from the area Josh took us to many vantage spots that we wouldn't have known about and we were able to get some great shots. The groups are small which means that Josh has the time to get around and check with everyone and give advice where needed. With Josh you definitely get your moneys worth.....you're on the move all the time. Our day would start with sunrise shots, then breakfast followed by a trip out to photographic locations. We would generally be at a location for some sunset shots and then dinner. At night it would be Astro Shots however one night it was quite cloudy and Josh had a plan B ready.....he took us to a place to photograph glow worms. The workshop ended with an editing session and this was excellent. I highly recommend Josh's workshops and I am booked to go on his New Zealand workshop early next year and I can't wait. It would be remiss of me not too mention TJ, Josh's beautiful fiancee , who was also extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Three days of editing with a great guy. There were a number of standouts: 1: what I call finishing the lesson. Often I have heard, read or been told to shoot dark, shoot to capture the highlights. This three day session showed how to process the dark, highlight capturing shots. A straightforward process to take to image from base to impressive was worked through and reinforced with lessons and homework - brilliant. 2: Running through the process on a variety of image types - HDR, pano, etc. This was great to reinforce the process and show how applicable it is across a variety of genres. Warrnambool is a wonderful town. Location of the workshop (venue) was great, nice and convenient to the central portion of town so I did not need to drive anywhere. Accommodation was good. I would definitely recommend Josh & his workshops to friends .

I had previously done & enjoyed a BFOP workshop with Josh so decided to do his editing masterclass. It was an amazing learning opportunity & Josh made it informative, fun & relaxed with lots of one on one time to ensure we grasped the concepts. I love the structured approach to editing that Josh taught us & really look forward to making it a permanent part of my processes. The accommodation was clean, comfortable & central with a conference room on site. We couldn't have asked for more from this weekend & look forward to more learning with Josh. Josh cuts to the important aspects of photography in upskilling his clients. He puts quality time into each class attendee. He has a panoramic knowledge of photography, especially landscape photography. And he’s a nice guy!

Did the city bridges night workshop with Josh, was really hands on and a great help with composition and settings tips . Left the tour feeling much smarter than when I arrived! Would recommend josh's workshop for anyone starting out or just looking to add some additional skills!

I took part in a Melbourne nightscape photo workshop in 2023 with Josh and his partner. Josh was friendly & open and shared his extensive knowledge freely and without judgement. I certainly learnt new skills for night photography and would highly recommend him for any photography workshop or multi day tour.

The Editing Masterclass workshop was exactly the kick that I needed. Josh and TJ were very patient and always full of encouragement, even when my newly edited files "disappeared". I worked hard in the following week using the printed notes and solved the file problem and have consolidated learnt editing skills. Warrnambool was a lovely location and I highly recommend this workshop to anyone feeling "stuck" with their post processing.

I really enjoyed my workshop! It was my first multi-day one and I wasn't 100% sure what to expect, but it was amazing. I learned lots of great techniques and had an awesome time with like minded people. Would definitely recommend booking in for a workshop with Josh if you can! (I've already booked my next one...)

The Iceland workshop was quite literally a dream come true for me. Other-worldly scenery and jaw-dropping Aurora displays made this the trip of a lifetime. I went from shooting semi-auto to full manual with great success in just a couple of days with Josh's guidance, and I came home with some of my favourite photos I've ever taken. It was so easy travelling with someone who knows the best places to go, and bonus points for making even the longest journeys entertaining for everyone.

A Melbourne pier workshop.. iconic place to visitant frequently shown in [very average] photos... but Josh patiently and skilfully explained more about the technical aspects of the camera and knowledge about the physics of photography to result in a better photo..... then added the unique Josh-creative style, which helped turn a potentially poor photo in to an artwork.. Josh can eloquently make the workshop most enjoyable and valuable regardless of the varied skill-mix of the participants.... my goal is to attend a travel workshop lead by Josh

If ever I see a Nikon course with Josh, I immediately book myself in. I cannot pick a favourite out of those I have done, because they are all my faves. Josh has a down to earth, relaxed style of teaching that actually brings impact to the course content. He teaches as a photographer speaking to fellow photographers. This in no way diminishes what he has to say, but because you feel as though you are part of something, the information being delivered stays with you. He is a master of composition and lighting, and dares to be different. His courses are fun, full of beautiful images, and packed with information about how to make amazing images of your own.

My favourite workshop so far was the Great Ocean Road, where I had the chance to capture idyllic landscapes, glow worms in the dark and interesting fungi on the forest walks. One of Josh’s greatest gifts, beyond his exceptional photography skills, is his incredible patience and calm, easy-going demeanour. I have been lucky enough to participate in many of Josh's amazing workshops all over the world. Every time I come away with a deeper understanding of my camera and all the many elements that ensure my photos aren't just good, that they are great. My favourite memory in 2025 was spending nights standing in front of 1000 year old Boab trees in Kununurra beneath the most stars I have ever seen in my life. Great locations, great people and the most generous photography teacher I am blessed to know. Next is to get better at editing and of course Josh has a course for that, can't wait! Attended an Astrophotography session with Josh. It was absolutely awesome. It’s the first time I’ve done astrophotography and Josh was so helpful in explaining settings and framing. I got a number of shots I love. Highly recommend!

In May I joined Josh in a one week workshop in Tasmania and what a week. The number of locations was extensive from Hobart to beautiful Cradle Mountain. Day one was a game changer for me, I brought my trusty DSLR and a 2nd hand z6 I purchased weeks before the trip but didn't know how to get the best out of it. With everyone using Z8's, Josh showed me the benefits of the Z camera, I didntbpick the DSLR up for the rest of the trip. I learnt so much from Josh, his knowledge and his generosity in sharing this knowledge. I would highly recommend a Josh Beams workshop to anyone who is seriously wanting to learn Photography.

Josh's workshops are great! Hands-on learning with real-time shooting and feedback. It is best to learn by doing. Specific mentorship & personalised critique of images supplements the learning experience. I've learnt how to manage difficult situations such as long exposures, HDR, and low-light photography. Emphasis on telling a story with images.

I have always liked taking photos, but never used my camera in anything but auto mode. I went to Iceland with Josh and he was such a great teacher. He is very good at explaining things, making it easy, but also putting you at ease. The whole trip I took photos in manual mode, and loved the results.
